“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” – Michelangelo
Each gem rough inspires our imaginations with a design that truly channels its beauty through scientific angles, artistic vision, and precise symmetry.
Each gem in the Roger Dery collection is faceted by artists who see themselves tasked with understanding the individual gem rough’s unique beauty and creating a design that displays its maximum potential.

Design
Most gems in the world are faceted with pre-made designs. Instead, we analyze the gem, its characteristics and features, and create a design uniquely curated to its needs so that its full beauty is on display. Sometimes, we find a design we really like and document it in a computer program for future reference.
Each facet, or flat surface, acts as a mirror reflecting light back to our eyes. The finer the polish, the more sparkle we see. We polish with diamond grit 4x smaller than the international standard to achieve that perfection.
Each gem type has its own ingredients and characteristics. Creating a gem’s design without considering its scientific properties is like coloring outside the lines. Creativity and science are a balance.
The angled bar with numbers dictates the exact angle that the gem meets the lap. The facets must work in conjunction to produce a pleasing pattern, reflect light, and create contrast, all within the gem type’s scientific characteristics.
Dopsticks
The dop is the cocoon that carries a gem through its transformational process. During the faceting process the gem is held in place on a dop with wax or glue.
Faceting Laps
Laps are spinning disks with sandpaper-like texture that create facets, the flat surfaces at varying angles reflecting light and brilliance. We use increasingly finer laps during the course of the faceting process as we need to remove less material and increase the precision.
